Why the Name Austria?
The word Austria comes from the Medieval Latin (Marchia) in which Austriaca means eastern borderland. Some say that Austriaca is the Latinised form of the Old High German name for the country. It is also said that Ostarreich means eastern kingdom, another word Ostar has a meaning eastern and reich which means Kingdom in old German. Some even say that the name Austria came from Ostrogoths who had a kingdom where Austria and northern Italy are now located.
