Why Named Prince Edward Island?

The island was named after Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and Strathearn (1767 to 1820) who was the fourth son of King Geroge III and the father of Queen Victoria. Prince Edward was also called the "Father of the Canadian crown"Although known as Prince Edward Island at this time, the island was also called the "Garden of the Gulf" because of its pastoral scenery and lush green agricultural lands through out the province.
